BEGA SHOWJUMPING CUP 2013
Double Clear Claims Cup
• Favourite pipped at the post by Smith’s phenomenal run

A SPECTACULAR double clear by female rider Emma Smith secured her the Bega Showjumping Cup on Sunday.
The Cup was a highlight of the Bega Cheese New Year Showjumping Celebration where more than 200 riders competed over four days.
Eighteen riders lined up, including a throng of eager locals, to contest for the prestigious cup.
Many riders posted four, or more, penalties in the first round, which saw the clear riders in a tight battle for the second round.
Showjumping stalwart Jenny Beresford said a good first round for a half-dozen competitors led to an epic showdown for the second round.
“There were five or six competitors out of the 18 who started did the first round clear,” Jenny said.
“Those riders had an advantage straight away.”
Cup favourite Clint Beresford was relegated to third place after a final jump fault in the second round.
Jenny said he really had to “throw down the gauntlet and have a go at the final rail” after Smith’s blistering run.
Jenny said Smith’s double clear was posted early in the second round putting pressure on all the riders following her.
“He knew the time was tight so he had to have a crack at it.
“Emma did it in 50.18, but she was faultless, it was unfortunate that Clint hit the final rail as he completed in a time of 49.99,” she said.
Jenny said Smith has been competing in the cup for many years and her tall chestnut stallion was a perfect horse for the course.
“He’s a big striding horse so he covers more ground which helps to post such a good time.
“Anybody following her knew they were in for a big challenge.”
Second place went to Jess Stalling, who also posted a double clear, but in the slower time of 55 seconds.
Meanwhile the contest’s youngest rider Lane Clarke, 15, found himself in fifth spot ahead of his father Brett.
Jenny said Clint had been contesting the cup since he was 17 and had been the youngest rider to take part until Lane stepped up to the challenge.
However, Jenny said Lane was a dominant performer throughout the overall competition.
Jenny said Clint’s coach Grant Hughes was also in contention and finished seventh on his horse Yakity Yak.
The course put riders to the test with some near-Olympic level jump heights, especially leading into the final round.
Former Olympian and course designer Gavin Chester said he was really pleased with the layout.
“The high level jumps really push the riders and it will get some good cantering from the bigger horses,” Chester said.
MOGILLA’s Lane Clarke was the star of the show at the Bega Cheese New Year Showjumping Celebration.
Lane, 15, recorded an impressive five wins, two runner-up finishes and a third to stamp his authority on the competition.
Impressively, Lane was one of the youngest competitors at the four-day event.
Lane’s performances and post-ride interviews drew generous response from the crowd, indicating he was a fan favourite.
Lane and one of his horses, Burnbrook Jumbuck, topped the leader board for pointscore in ring one, sharing the honour with Sydney’s Stephanie MacKillop.
Saturday saw Lane register two victories in ring one and another win in ring two.
Lane’s top form continued on Sunday with a victory in ring one, before securing another win in ring one on Monday.
Showjumping stalwart Jenny Beresford said Lane “dominated the competition”.
Lane also finished fifth in the Bega Showjumping Cup.
Lane’s dad Brett Clarke also displayed strong form, recording two victories and a third place finish.
Others to impress at the celebration include Cobargo’s Caitlin Reid on her horse Asta La Vista.
Reid won four events in ring two, including two on Monday, to top the pointscore in that ring.
“Caitlin absolutely dominated the ring two pointscore,” Beresford said.
“There was no-one anywhere near her with 18 points overall and the nearest competitor was on six.”
Bega’s Clint Beresford enjoyed an impressive competition.
Clint, 21, secured a win on his horse Emmaville Jitterbug in the open six bar in ring two on Friday.
Clint also had two runner-up finishes, a third and fifth placing.
Craig Matthews, of Bega, secured two third place finishes at the competition.

Beresford and Emmaville Jitterbug win Summer Classic Futurity
Harriet Gruen, Saturday, 7 December 2013 - Jumping NSW
Bega's Clint Beresford posted the only double clear round in the Winning Appliances Future Stars Classic final to win the event for up-and-coming horses on Emmaville Jitterbug at the Summer Showjumping Classic in Sydney on Saturday.
Olympic course designer Leopoldo Palacios set a technical track for the first round of competition with a tight time allowed, which caught out several riders on otherwise penalty-free rounds.
The 10 riders with four or fewer faults returned for the jump-off with a reverse-seeded draw. Two riders carried four penalties, three carried time and five were on zero penalties.
The two four faulters -- Jamie Winning with Tulara Balouch and Chris Chugg riding Black Currency -- put pressure on the later riders by posting clears, with the riders carrying time faults from the first round all drawing rails to add to their scores.
Of the five clears, Jamie Kermond with Yandoo Oaks Constellation and Nick Sheehan with Cortez pulled two rails each to finish on eight penalties apiece.
Stephen Hill set down the fastest time of the class with two riders to go, but had an unlucky rail to finish on four.
With the pressure on the final two riders, Maddison Stephens on the Yalambis Cambridge pulled a rail midway through the course, ensuring all the pressure rested on the final combination of Beresford and Emmaville Jitterbug, who sealed the victory with another classy clear.

Bega Dominate at Canberra Cup
Bega Showjumping Club members dominated the results of the ACT Centenary Showjumping Cup held over the weekend of the 12th & 13th October 2013. Each championship category was taken out by a Bega Showjumping Club member with the exception of the open rider where a Bega rider came in as runner-up.
Jenny Sheppard reports for Jumping NSW:
Nineteen-year-old Milly Clarke claimed victory in the ActewAGL Centenary Cup at Equestrian Park in Canberra on Sunday, riding her experienced grey thoroughbred Diamond B Jimmy Choo.
Clarke, who lives on the south coast at Berry, was the only rider to complete the two rounds of competition without jumping penalties, although she added one time penalty in the second round.
Clarke was ecstatic about her triumph, having had no expectations of a win before the class.
“I wasn’t sure about starting today -- we haven’t started in a grand prix class since the beginning of the year. I was definitely not expecting to win,” Clarke said after her round. She was full of praise for her wonderful partner Jimmy Choo, declaring “he’s the best”.
International course designer Brad Longhurst of Yass set a technical but fair 1.40m track.
The first round saw just two clears, from Clarke and Jennifer Wood of Cudal riding yet another grey, her lovely mare Sweetshot. Five riders finished with just four penalties for dropping a foot in the open water jump, including Canberra local Clint Beresford riding Emmaville Jittabug, Emma Smith of Pitt Town riding Ego Casablanca and Jess Stalling of The Oaks riding Diamond B Vermont.
Fourteen-year-old up-and-coming star Lane Clarke of Bega rode a near-perfect round, dropping just the final fence riding GH Tiger Lilly.
Canberra junior Izabella Stone was also unlucky to have just one rail down riding her lovely mare Cosmorex Coffee Latte.
Twelve riders started in the second round in reverse order of penalties. Popular local farrier Beresford jumped a fast, classy clear, putting pressure on the final two riders.
Clarke took a conservative track to ensure a clear with a single time penalty.
The gate was open for the final competitor, Wood, to steal the title, however, a rail at the second fence secured Clarke the win, and Wood could not match the blistering time set down by Beresford.
The ActewAGL Centenary Cup was a battle of the rising stars with more than half of the starters under the age of 24. The average age of the top five placegetters was 19. Some extremely stylish riding was on display, demonstrating the current depth of talent rising through the Australian showjumping ranks.
The final results of the ActewAGL Centenary Cup were:
Alisa Williams won the JNSW Amateur Series Qualifier riding Broadway Jittabug as well as the overall Amateur Champion.
The Seniors Cup, an initiative sponsored by 50 Acres Communications Agency for competitors aged more than 40, was won by Jeremy Williams riding Wolverine.
The Junior overall winner was Lane Clarke riding Burnbrook Jumbuck.
Thanks to all the wonderful sponsors for supporting Canberra showjumping, the hard-working show committee and all of the ACTSJC committee members, the judges, marshals, pole pickers and everyone who lent a hand throughout the event to keep the three rings of competition running smoothly and efficiently.
As a Canberra Centenary event, we celebrated 100 years of horsepower and history in the nation’s capital with a fantastic three days of jumping. Thank you to the ACT Government and the Centenary of Canberra for their support.
What a great result for jumping – well done to all, especially the Canberra Jump Club for three wonderful days of competition.

Bega's First Australian Champion!
No Amateur Effort for Champion
Story by Jacob McMaster for Bega Distict News
BEGA’S Craig Matthews has been named Australia’s amateur show jumping champion.
He was declared the winner after competing in the Australian show jumping championships held in Werribee, Victoria, over four days this week.
Matthews and his palomino accomplice Fifa La Viva, more commonly known to locals as “Fifi” rode three podium finishes over three days of events to claim the title on a pointscore basis.
In the first round last Friday Matthews and Fifi rode third, then finished first in the second round and tallied a second place finish in the final event to win overall.
Fifi’s owner Kirsty McPaul said she was ecstatic for Matthews following his continued good performances.
“Even after only riding together for a short time they’ve done really well,” McPaul said.
“We gave Fifi to Craig to ride back in December and she has really improved working with him.
“We knew she had a lot of potential and she just wasn’t going to reach it with me due to family commitments,” she said.
McPaul said Matthews had been putting in huge amounts of effort and was very deserving of the win.
“I really admire Craig’s work ethic with horses.
“Over the past few years he has really gained lots of knowledge working with other horsemen and riders.
“He carries that knowledge on to his work with Fifi,” she said.
McPaul said letting Matthews work with her horse had been the best thing for Fifi.
“I wanted to see her reach her full potential and Craig is such a talented rider,
“I knew he would get the best out of working with Fifi, the pair travelled to the Sydney Royal recently and had some really good success.
“And now this win, it’s just fantastic to see local riders doing so well,” McPaul said.
“She has improved so much thanks to Craig, she is a different horse now.
Matthews was unavailable to talk with the BDN as he is now competing at the Melbourne Royal.
McPaul said other locals, too, were having good success.

Bega Success at Sydney Royal 2013
Five Bega Showjumping Club members have excelled at the recent Sydney Royal Easter Show. Sarah Dreverman and Alisa Williams contested two events in the Amateur rider category. Lane Clarke competed in the Junior Showjumping section and Clint Beresford and Craig Matthews in the Young Rider section, each comprising of four events.
The account for Bega was opened in the first Amateur class when Alisa Williams and her family-owned and bred grey mare “Anigrey” were just beaten into second place. The following day both Sarah Dreverman and Williams contested the second event in which only five competitors jumped clear in the first round. Those five competitors then jumped off against the clock with Dreverman setting an absolutely cracking pace as first rider out. Nobody could catch Dreverman and her handsome paint gelding “Emmaville Mosaic” who won the class by a very creditable three seconds. Williams finished in third place and was edged out of second position by a fraction of a second by ex-Bega Pony Club member Nathan Carswell who is now a well-respected farrier and rider in the Sydney area. Dreverman’s success continued at the Sydney Royal only days later when she was a member of the NAB Bega Young Farmers Team who won the final of the Young Farmers Challenge (BDN 2/4/13).
Easter Saturday marked the start of the Junior and Young Rider Showjumping competitions. Junior riders are those aged 12-18 years and Young Riders are 16-21 years of age. Fifteen-year-old Lane Clarke of Mogilla and his family-owned and bred mare “GH Tigerlilly” were competing together at their very first Royal Show. Although very nervous, young Clarke excelled, jumping a clear first round in the first event. He was very unlucky to knock the final hurdle in the jump-off round against the clock. This fault relegated him to fourth place and a very promising start to the show. Next out was Clint Beresford and Craig Matthews in the Young Rider class. Twenty year-old Beresford is just recently home from a successful trip to Bangkok where he represented Australia in a team showjumping competition. Beresford and his very flash young horse “Emmaville Jitterbug” impressed with a foot perfect clear round in the first. Matthews, who at 21 years of age is in his final year of Young Rider competition and has already tasted success at the Sydney Royal over the past few years. This year Matthews was competing on the in-experienced young palomino mare “Fifa La Viva”owned by Stuart and Kirsty McPaul. Although the mare had never competed at this level before, Matthews experience guided her around the tough course to finish with only a couple of rails down. Beresford contested the jump-off against the clock and rode a really neat round to finish in second place in the first event.
Easter Sunday saw the second day of competition for the local lads. Clarke was out first and jumped yet again another outstanding clean round. With fewer nerves than the day before, Clarke came out firing into the jump-off round against the clock. Unfortunately the combination turned a little tight onto the second fence and knocked it down but left the rest of the course standing to finish in third place. In the next event Beresford had supporters on the edge of their seat when he was clear all the way until the last jump when he just tipped it and it fell leaving him unable to contest the second round. Matthews rode a much more confident round on the second day just lowering two fences in the treble combination. Neither boy won a ribbon in the second event. That night, Clarke and Beresford were invited to contest the Six Bar jumping event which was part of the main entertainment. Clarke made it to the final round with only one other competitor. Although Clarke cleared the final hurdle which stood at 1.65m, he unfortunately knocked the much lower third fence. The other competitor cleared the all fences and was declared the winner with Clarke placing second. Beresford finished the six-bar in equal third place.
Day three of competition was speed class day with all competitors contesting one round only against the clock with a penalty of four seconds added to your time for each rail knocked. The Young rider event was first this time and Matthews was first out on course lowering two rails and adding eight seconds to his final score. Beresford’s horse was a little unsettled in this event and knocked an uncharacteristic two rails also. Both riders finished out of the placings again. Clarke however was out to better his fourth and third placing from the first two competitions. That is exactly what he did, posting the fastest round of the competition but knocking one rail. With the four seconds added to his time he still finished in second place. The talk around the stables was beginning – could he go better again in the final competition and win?
The final day of competition was Grand Prix day where the largest, most technical courses were set for the riders. Riders with eight faults or less in the first round were invited to contest the second round with scores from both rounds added together. Clarke contested the Junior Grand Prix first and was one of only four riders to post a clear round in the first. The excitement was building when Clarke posted a very fast and clear round in the jump off. He was one of only two riders to jump a double clear round and to add to this he was a massive five seconds faster than his closest rival meaning that he had done it – Clarke had won his very first Royal Show event! To add to this it was announced that Clarke was the only competitor in the Junior Showjumping to place in every event and he was awarded the Most Successful Junior Boy Showjumping Rider of the Sydney Royal Easter Show.
Riding on a high after witnessing Clarke’s performance, Beresford and Matthews were out next in the Young Rider Grand Prix. A very challenging course was set ranging between 1.35m and 1.45m in height. Only five competitors posted clear rounds in the first and two of them were the Bega contestants. The Bega supporters could not believe it when both Beresford and Matthews rode beautiful clean rounds. Eight riders were invited back to contest the second round and only one of those managed to finish on zero penalties and was awarded first prize. Beresford posted the fastest round but just knocked the plank at the Australian Flag obstacle to finish in second place. Matthews and his mount were tiring and finished the second round with three rails on the ground and in a very creditable sixth place. At the presentation, supporters were delighted when Beresford was awarded the Most Successful Rider in Young Rider Competitions at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. Bega Showjumping Club is so proud to be able boast the two best showjumping riders under 21 years of age at the Sydney Royal Easter Show and would like to congratulate all members on their outstanding performances.

Bega Judges Clinic Report
An Equestrian Australia show jumping judges refresher clinic was held in the Bega Showgrounds luncheon room on Saturday, 23rd March 2013. The clinic was suitable for EA accredited judges needing up-dating and or re-accreditation. It was also suitable for competitors plus interested people keen and new to the sport.
There were nine participants whose experience ranged as above, from interested helpers to Level One judges with also a few competitors.
Areas covered included JNSW topical issues, new and important EA rules, use of the rule book, judges and other officials responsibilities, correct article numbers, definition of official, common competitions, faults and penalties, scoring and placings, finishing with a range of interesting scenarios.
Jack Wilson and Kirsty McPaul sat and passed their Level One open-book multiple-choice test the next day.
The evaluation forms showed that all participants thought the clinic organisation and presentation were excellent.
Many thanks to JNSW, the Bega Show Jumping Club and the Bega Show Society. Special thanks to Jack Wilson, the organiser and to (Jeff) Poss Otton for his BBQ skills.

The following day a Course Designer refresher course was conducted by Brad Longhurst. Twelve eager showjumping enthusiasts put pen to paper and tried their hand at designing after studying a power point presentation on the do's and don'ts of course designing. Brad's presentation was light and informative and all attendees really enjoyed the day and were keen to put their newly learnt skills to the test next Jump Club day.

Clint Beresford to represent Australia in Thailand
February 2013
By Jenny Beresford
Clint Beresford aged 20 from Bega has been selected from an amazing 47 nominations throughout Australia to represent Australia as a member of a Young Rider Show Jumping team heading for Bangkok, Thailand. Riders from the age of 16 through to their 21st birthday had the opportunity to nominate for this event. They had to have had previous results and experience riding all types of horses other than their own. Clint has been working for Grant Hughes, his coach and the leading equine trainer in Curtin ACT at Forest Park Riding School, since he completed his HSC. Clint rides and trains up to 8 horses a day, mostly clients horses and new horses to the riding school. He is also attending Richmond TAFE once a month for his trade as a Farrier. He is in his second year and has already established a clientele of his own in the Canberra area.
Clint, along with 2 other riders, Gemma Creighton from QLD and Zoe Boulton from VIC have been selected to compete against other international teams on borrowed horses in Bangkok from the 21-24 February, 2013.
The reserves are Hannah Fletcher WA and Michael Cross ACT
In 2010 Clint and his good mate, Craig Matthews, had the opportunity to qualify for the Australian representative at the Youth Olympics in Singapore. The opportunity to represent their country at such a young age was an exciting prospect for the boys who are both members of the Bega Showjumping Club. They were in the top five shortlist. Clint and Craig believed the selection was because of their ability to ride and adapt to many different types of horses. Tom McDermott from Wagga was the sole representative to go to Singapore where he did exceptional well. Clint narrowly missed out but was selected by Equestrian Australia as the 2nd Reserve rider.
Craig and Clint are great mates who have been friends since they both started Kindergarten. Both boys started their riding careers at the Bega Pony Club and are now mentored by very successful showjumpers.
Also Clint and Craig have been named on the 2013 Equestrian NSW Young Rider squad along with 14 other riders who will compete at the Australian championships at the end of the year. Their achievements have been recognised over the last 12 months results.
Another up and coming talented rider is Lane Clarke who will be competing at the Sydney Royal Easter Show over Easter in the Junior Showjumping events. Lane has been making a name for himself over the last few years, taking out the Junior Showjumping Champion for this area. Craig and Clint will be joining Lane at the Easter Show as they have both qualified for the Young Riders section of the Showjumping at the Show.
We wish them the best of luck in all their achievements.
