Dingwall on winning

STEPHEN Dingwall has been declared the winner of the Grand Hotel Bega Showjumping Cup.
Dingwall, of Murrumbateman, fought off a strong field to win the major local showjumping honour.
The Bega Showjumping Cup, which began last Thursday and concluded on Sunday, attracted 180 riders and 380 horses.
In total, 1800 rounds were contested, up by 35 per cent on the previous year.
The main event, the Grand Hotel Bega Showjumping Cup, was held on Sunday and 17 riders competed.
All combinations who weren’t eliminated in the first round were invited back to contest a “jump-off”.
The jump-off saw riders competing in seeded order and there were four combinations carrying zero penalties into round two.
Cup organiser Kirsty McPaul said the jump-off didn’t disappoint the large crowd.
“It was an exciting jump-off, in particular from riders carrying faults and keen to make up for lost ground,” she said.
Canberra’s Grant Hughes, a perennial runner-up at the cup, was the first rider to post a double clear round.
Hughes was able to obtain the lead and may have even sighted victory before Dingwall took centre stage.
Dingwall set a grace pace and had spectators on the edge of their seats as he approached the finish line.
However, McPaul said Dingwall’s horse Cavalier Bryn “spooked” at the second last fence, meaning it had to jump from almost a stand-still.
The combination was able to successfully clear the fence to record the win.
McPaul said an appreciative crowd celebrated Dingwall’s victory.
“The showground grandstand was full for the main event – there was a lot more spectators than normal.”
Hughes had to resort to being runner-up again while Sydney pair James Hetherington and David Cameron finished third and fourth respectively.
Other highlights of the main event included Mogilla’s Brett Clarke thrilling the crowd with a fast, clear round in the jump-off to add to his eight-fault first round.
Ex-Bega local Emma Smith also posted the fastest time in the jump-off, but unfortunately knocked her second last fence.
Elsewhere, Andrew Lamb and his mount Argento won the Helen Slater Futurity Award for the second successive year.
Clarke and GH Tigerlilly won the Premier Floats A and B grade championships, and he also won D grade on Blossom’s Little Brother.
Clarke’s son Lane won the junior championships, riding Rambo.
McPaul said she was grateful for the support of the Bega Showjumping Club members, who started at 7am each day, finishing after dark.
“It was a huge credit to our hard working club members,” she said.
“It was encouraging to see numbers increase.”

IT'S OFFICIAL - The Bega Cheese New Year Showjumping Celebration featuring the Grand Hotel Bega Showjumping Cup
Story Bega District News - 14th December 2012
The Bega Showjumping Cup continues to grow from strength to strength with this year’s event bringing more riders and excitement to the Bega Showground on December 27, 28, 29 and 30. This is the 17th year in which this prestigious event has featured on the Australian Showjumping circuit. For the third year in a row, the Grand Hotel Bega has secured naming rights of the main event, the Grand Hotel Bega Showjumping Cup grand prix. This event offers one of the richest prize purses in the country. To add to the events generous sponsorship list is Bega Cheese who has once again come on board showing great support and earning naming rights of the entire four day show. This year’s event has been titled the Bega Cheese New Year Showjumping Celebration featuring the Grand Hotel Bega Showjumping Cup. This is not the first time that Bega Cheese have had naming rights of this event and the Bega Showjumping Club is grateful for the continued sponsorship the company has given over the past 17 years.
Bega Showjumping Club President Jeffrey Otton describes the response to this year’s event as overwhelming, predicting that the number of entries will exceed the record numbers of last year. “This year we have added an extra day to the program allowing us to hold extra events and we are also hiring portable stables for the first time to accommodate our growing number of entries.” Otton said. This year the program will start a day early with three small classes, all under 65cm in height. It is hoped that these classes will encourage more local club members and children to the event and give all levels of horse and rider an opportunity to perform on the “big stage.” The following three days are sure to be action-packed, starting at 7:30am each morning and predicted to go until dark each night. “I have a feeling we may need to turn the lights on to ensure we get through the large program of events.” Otton said.
The main event, the Grand Hotel Bega Showjumping Cup, will start at 6pm on Saturday night December 29. This is a grand prix event where the height and technicality of the course will test both horse and rider. This year the event has Graeme Watts and Ian Hamilton from Queensland designing the courses for the show. It will be interesting to see if another rider with a local connection wins again as they have for the past three years. The local crowd were thrilled in 2009 when Bega’s Jamie Smith was the first local to ever take out the event. This trend however has continued with Narooma’s Sandra Kenny winning the Cup in 2010 and former Bega boy, now residing in Canberra, Jamie Grant winning in front of many local friends and relatives last year. It is always exciting for spectators to see local riders come out on top of competitions that boast many Australian representatives such as Vicki Roycroft, Chris Chugg and Gavin Chester.
The event has in excess of 60 sponsors, most of them local businesses and loyal supporters over the years. The club is very grateful to these businesses that support the cup, allowing the club to continue running one of the most prestigious events on the Australian showjumping calendar.
So if you are looking for some entertainment in the school holidays over the New Years’ holiday, head down to the Bega Showground and become a part of the action. The best part is that it is free. Neville takes out the ACTEWAGL Canberra Cup in an exciting jump-off
CANBERRA CUP WINNERS! Neville Cuzner & Turbo Mack
Many Bega Showjumping Club members headed over the hill to contest three fantastic days of showjumping competition at Equestrian Park in Canberra. Hosted by our friendly neighbors, the ACT Showjumping Club, the ACTEWAGL Canberra Showjumping Cup, held on the 5th, 6th & 7th October 2012 was by all accounts a hugely successful show. Especially successful for our Bega riders who cleaned up the prizes and brought home many ribbons between them all. In fact, out of the 48 events held in three rings, 18 of them were won by Bega Showjumping Club members. Not only did Bega members win 18 events, Bega members won three major awards including the main class, the ACTEWAGL Canberra Cup.
Showjumping fans and spectators were treated to a really entertaining Grand Prix event on the Sunday afternoon when Neville Cuzner from Bodalla used all of his experience to out-class a much fancied and not-to-mention, much younger group of seasoned competitors. The well-known grandfather has been a highly successful showjumper for many years and has always proven to be the toughest of competitors. Nev is showing no sign of his age or slowing down and the affinity he has with his special, home-bred horses is amazing to witness. Neville won the event on his current top-string mount SS Turbo Mack and of course his ever-faithful, hard working wife Margaret was chief strapper as she has always been for many years. These days Nev has a proud tribe of Grand-children who also help out Pa when he needs it. It was said that Neville's ability to perform under pressure is what saw him take out the class. Neville edged out Bega's Brett Clarke who, after a very successful lead-up throughout the show, ended the class in 4th position with his favourite little mare GH Tigerlilly.
The Williams family were all systems go, entering every class possible. Warren, Nola & Adena had a truck load of horses prepared for Deon and Alisa to ride when they make their flying trip down the freeway. The Williams family won seven events and Alisa won the overall pointscore in the Amateur Championship scoring herself a very nice saddle as a prize. The Clarke family were also very successful winning much between them. Young Jess was the champion, bringing home a rug for winning the highest pointscore in Ring 3. Jess and her friends had the most enjoyable time, competing and riding all day, everyday! The young girls including Jess, Alaina, Mikayla and Caitlin have now established several gym routines that they can perform on their horse! The ponies were definitely glad to finally get home.
From all reports, the Canberra Jump Club did an amazing job with the running and organising of the show. Entries were huge and a great time was had by all. It was great to see so many Bega Jump Club members got to Canberra to support the event. Congratulations to all involved!

Lots of Confidence gained at Maree Hewitt School
25 members were lucky enough to enjoy the expert tuition of highly regarded showjumping coach Maree Hewitt last weekend, August 25 & 26. With just a simple showjumping course set up, Maree trained riders over various parts of the course concentrating on establishing straightness, rhythm and maintaining an appropriate speed. After quite an extensive lesson on the flat on the first day, the riders gained a better understanding of the importance of education on the flat and over poles on the ground. After tackling parts of the course individually, the school ended with some great course riding and a masterclass in riding jump-offs. Maree encouraged the riders to think carefully about how they were going to ride each related line and turn before setting out. The improvement was very evident with most riders commenting on the confidence they gained.
On the other side of the showground, some grids, lines and a simple course were set up. Riders with extra horses or who were not a part of the school took advantage of having a little one-on-one time with the exercises. This was very beneficial to our members who were there to take advantage of the situation. The weather over the weekend could only be described as being perfect with the showground in pretty good condition considering the beating it has taken. Thank you to all members who stuck around outside of their lessons to help out in the ring and assist with the setting up and packing away.

Mrs. Jennings takes out the Mother's Fossils Cup challenge for 2012
Celebrating Mothers! - Fossil Cup competitors 2012
Bega District News - 27th July 2012
The Bega Showjumping Club Annual Fossil Cup Competition day has well and truly cemented its place as one of the year’s most popular equestrian events. On Sunday July 22, the Bega Showground was full to capacity with horse vehicles. Riders came from all over the district to compete for the great prizemoney and many prizes again on offer. Last year the club decided to capitalize on this events popularity by turning it into a fundraiser for the Australian Cancer Council. Once again, the Daffodil Day and Pink Ribbon showjumping fences were on display in Ring 1. A percentage of all entry fees collected on the day will go to this very worthy cause.
The feature event of the day is of course the Fossils Cup. This event was the original brain-child of club member Jackie Curtis who wished to create an event especially for the “older” members of the club. Each year the event has subtly taken on themes. One year the event only had competitors who had never showjumped before. Another year the event saw popular identities from around Bega competing against each other including the Mayor Tony Allen and then Chamber President, Robet Hayson. Two years ago “Legends from the past” showed the enthusiastic crowd just how competitive the Fossil Cup event could potentially become. This year the event celebrated Mothers of Showjumping. Fourteen nervous mothers donned pink shirts in support of the Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Foundation and set out together to walk the course and prepare mentally for the challenge. A huge thank you must go to Brett Clarke who organised and prepared all of these ladies for this year’s Fossils Cup. The Clarke family also generously donated horses to those ladies who did not have their own and gave lessons in the lead up to the event to ensure a positive experience was had by all.
All of the preparation certainly paid off when all but one competitor finished the first round with zero penalties. A magnificent start to the competition. Following the first round, all competitors were invited back to contest the jump-off over a shortened and heightened course with the fastest mother with the least amount of faults to be declared the winner. Well the ladies did not hold back and really showed the keen audience and their children what they were made of! Local squash champion Wendy Constance has not competed on horse back for many years. Wendy was really setting a winning pace when unfortunately her borrowed horse “Rambo” slipped over on a corner incurring elimination. Both horse and rider walked away with only hurt pride. Jodie MacNamara from Bodalla, daughter of showjumping legend Neville Cuzner and mother of four has not jumped since she was a child. Although she squealed for the entire course, the elation she felt when it was all over was very evident from her huge smile from ear to ear. One of Bega’s most competitive on the hockey field Melinda Armstrong is definitely no slouch on a horse and has a few competition miles under her belt this year. Her round was also very slick even though most of it was ridden with only one stirrup. Bec Bruest is an expert in the shearing sheds around the district and is improving with every round in the showjumping arena, a sport she only started last year. Chrissie French from Nimmitabel is a champion campdrafter and stock horse trainer and showed her great versatility and horsemanship to turn in what looked like an unbeatable round on the Clarke’s top string horse GH Tigerlilly. But this year the Cup went to the evergreen and super competitive Sue Jennings riding for the first time ever, her niece Samara George’s new horse Who Me. For those of you who know the Griffin family in Bega, you would know how competitive they are in any sport. Once again, the familiar sight of family matriarch Shirl Griffin was seen calling from the grandstand, urging her daughter Sue to victory. The work crew in the ring were put on notice when Sue spun her horse around corners and inside fences that spectators were just not expecting. It was a great demonstration of riding from the mother of three and local primary school teacher.
Events continued throughout the day finishing just before dark. Of course the day would not have been possible without the voluntary help from club members. The club would like to thank the judges for the day Greg Grant, Richard Otton and Madge Salway for watching over proceedings. Thank you also to the many sponsors who donated money and prizes to the event. There were many happy prize winners on the day.

Get Well Gavin!
Oh dear, what have we done! Only 2 weeks after the clubs very successful Gavin & Sharon Chester Showjumping School held in Bega, Gavin has suffered a heart attack and is reported to be in a stable condition recovering in hospital. Family have said that Gavin is remarkably well following surgery and is expected to be home soon. The Bega Showjumping Club have sent flowers and well wishes and we really hope that Gavin is back on his feet as soon as possible.
In follow up to the above mentioned school, I have received some more photos from Esther Black that include groups that I didn't photograph, which is great! Check them out in the Photo Gallery under JUMP CLUB DAYS

Young members at Young Pony Club Camp
In the July school holidays each year, many young riders and their ponies attend the well re-known Young Pony Club camp. In fact, this camp has built up such a reputation that families travel from all over the area just to participate. The camp is a week-long phenomena of fun, fun and more fun. Learning lots of new skills and improving your confidence in riding is just a wonderful side effect.
The Clarke family, originally from the Young area have been attending the Young Pony Club religiously for the past few years. They have spread the good word and many other locals have ventured to the camp to see what the fuss is all about. Fresh back from the camp this school holidays, the Clarke's and also first-time attendee Abby Douch have sent through a small report and some photos to share with us all.
Remember, if you would like to share photos, results or a story with the club, send them through to Kirsty on the email at the top of this page for inclusion on the website.
Abby's Story (by mum Kylie)....
Abby Douch, who has just turned seven years old, went to her her first and definitely not last Young Pony Club Camp. Abby, from the Snowy River Pony Club (Berridale/Dalgety) rode the 'experienced' Kylandee Maxwell (who has attended the last eight Young Pony Club camps with his previous family from Condoblin). In fact a few of the Condobilites came looking for Max to say hello to Max and to check on his welfare and new life with a much smaller rider. Max who proved to be the ultimate all-rounder gave Abby a great ride all week including doing tent pegging, polocrosse and the usual sporting, showjumping and cross country disciplines. Abby also loved the harness sessions with former Bega locals Zita and Dave Farrell having a ride and drive of all the harness steeds. A couple of busters did not deter Abby from anything - if anything it went the other way and she gritted her teeth and kicked on. It was a great week and we met lots of nice people and caught up with some we haven't seen for ages. We'll be going back for certain.
From the Clarke's....
For the first time, all three Clarke kids rode at the Young Pony Club Camp. Lane rode Sam in the Eagles group, Jessica rode Tammy in the Camels group and Jack rode Pepper in the Bilby's group. The kids had the best time riding from 9am to 4:30pm each day with four riding sessions in a day, Monday to Friday. The kids did a range of activities including Polocrosse, tent pegging, cross country, showjumping, dressage, ball games, sporting, harness, endurance riding, show craft, bare back riding and theory in which some kids attained their Pony Club Proficiency Certificates. Most groups had a group chant which they performed at the Talent Quest on Thursday night. We had a great week, finishing up with the disco on Friday.

Members delighted with Gavin & Sharon School
Once again, the Gavin Chester Showjumping School was a huge success but it was doubly so this year when his wife Sharon joined him in instructing our members on the 23rd & 24th June. Having the services of both Gavin and Sharon enabled twice as many members to take part. It is very hard for the Bega Showjumping Club to attract top level instructors for a reasonable price so members really appreciate the support that the Chester family have given us over the years.
Both Gavin and Sharon have a teaching style that is friendly, basic and easy to understand and they both prefer to let the exercises do the teaching for them. The exercises are far from easy, really challenging the concentration and response of both horse and rider. The grids and lines set up had a good mix of curved and straight lines with un-true distances. Riders were encouraged to make a good distance themselves using a combination of eye and correct balanced riding. In the end the horses became a lot more rideable and the rider much more focused and thoughtful (with the exception of Lucy Evans who had to pay Gavin a Cherry Ripe every time she 'lost focus'). The children in particular benefited from Sharon's zig-zag exercise which accentuated the necessity of landing on the correct lead and riding your corners.
The club is currently in the process of trying to secure Gavin & Sharon for another school very soon. Watch this space!
Photos from the weekend can be found in the PHOTO GALLERY under Jump Club Days.
Some videos of the exercises will be uploaded to the club's Facebook page.

Sarah is a winner!
Enjoying the victory lap are winners Sarah Dreverman & Mosaic.
Congratulations to Bega Showjumping Club member Sarah Dreverman and her mount Emmaville Mosaic or "Charlie" as he is more affectionately known, for taking out the champion FEI Category B Amateur division at the recent ESP Winter Amateur Showjumping Championships. These championships are run by the ESP team led by John Vallance and Jane Frankum over the long weekend in June each year.
Held once again in horrible weather at the wonderful equestrian facility Bicentennial Park in Camden, Sarah proved too strong for the large field. Sarah definitely redeemed herself after last year recording a win, win and an elimination preventing her from taking out the championship. This year, with the enormous support of her family Sue, Tim and Rhiannon, Sarah held herself together to win the championship convincingly.
The term "amateur showjumping" is one that we aren't too familiar with in rural areas but it has become a massive phenomena around the country, particularly in city areas. All amateur showjumping events around the state attract huge entries and are very popular. Tim Dreverman introduced an Amateur series into his Snowy Mountains Festival in Cooma held in January this year and received well over 80 entries who were competing for the overall prize of a saddle. Our very own Brett Clarke was the eventual winner of this prestigious prize but it was not an easy win for our local legend, being pushed to the post by a few, in particular Nicola Geddes from Armidale. There was also a 15 round Amateur series held around the state, culminating at the Sydney World Cup Final Show in December. This was won by Sydney's Martin Gostellow. Gostellow also won the very first Amateur Showjumping competition introduced at the Sydney Royal Easter Show this year.
The definition of an Amateur rider is extensive and can be looked up on the Equestrian Australia website. Basically, you have to be 21 years of age or over and never competed in a World Cup, Olympics and some other "higher level" events as stipulated in the official definition. It may be worth thinking about introducing a series to Bega????

Great attendance at Jump Club Days.
With three Jump Club days all ready completed, Bega Showjumping Club year 2012 is looking to be a big one! The first three days have attracted great numbers and everyone has been having a lot of fun. Their have been two arenas set up to allow the more time for everyone to get their fair share of time in the ring. Thank you to Greg Grant and Paddy Otton for over-seeing proceedings in both arenas and helping our new members learn the rules of our great sport. Thank you also to the members who help with the setting up and packing away. It would be great if EVERYONE could help out at sometime during the day. Jump Club is NOT a service, we are all their for the same reason and need to help each other so we can all have an enjoyable day. Also, thank you Caroline and Kate Otton for cooking lunch.
Hopefully I will get some results posted on the website soon. Our point-scorers and result collectors Greg Grant and Jodie Grant have been very busy compiling scores for the Charlie Smith Memorial Highest Pointscore competition. Stay tuned for the current leader board!
Last of all, I would like to thank Heather and Esther Black for emailing some great Jump Club photos to me. If you have any photos or stories you would like published on the website, please forward them onto me. It is much appreciated and we all love to see what great things our members are getting up to!

_Far South Coast Showjumper of the Year Series - Presentation Dinner 2012
The Winners 2012
_Clarkes dominate showjumping awards
Story & Photos by Josh Bartlett - Bega District News
THERE were lots of laughs, but not a horse in sight on Saturday night.
The annual Far South Coast Showjumper of the Year presentation was again dominated by a local father and son combination. Mogilla’s Brett Clarke took home the Keith Gordon Senior Showjumper of the Year Award while his son Lane, 14, won the Graham Johnson Junior Showjumper of the Year Award. It is the third successive year the pair has won the prestigious prizes and Brett said he was happy with the results. “I am proud to win… it was a tough series,” Brett said.
“It was pretty good for Lane too.” Brett rode GH Tigerlilly to victory while Lane recorded his series win on GH Rambo. “It’s nice to do this together as a family,” Brett said. “We bred the horses ourselves, which was pleasing.” Brett won the senior competition by a narrow margin, edging out Gemma Harrington and her mount Presto. The seven-event series was reduced to six after the cancellation of the Bemboka Show. Brett admitted that Harrington may have overtaken him if that event had gone ahead.
Meanwhile, Lane recorded a much more comfortable win in the junior series, finishing streets ahead of runners up Lucy Evans and Webb. Far South Coast Showjumping Club spokesperson Kirsty McPaul said Lane was a “phenomenal talent”. “Lane was a clear winner and was untouchable, as he has been for the past three years,” McPaul said. McPaul said Lane’s standout performance was at the Bega Show, when he moved into the senior division on behalf of his dad.
“Brett had broken his ribs and Lane went excellently,” she said. “Lane didn’t win, but he had never jumped that high before – it was his first taste of the senior competition. “He competed in the 1.4 metre grand prix and only knocked one rail down in each round.” McPaul said Brett was also a deserved winner. “He’s a good rider, but it was close,” she said. “If Bemboka hadn’t been missed, it could have come down to the wire.”
Saturday night’s presentation dinner at Asian Pearl Restaurant, Bega, was attended by more than 60 sponsors, members, competitors, officials and volunteers.
McPaul was master of ceremonies for the event and highlights included the screening of a DVD containing bloopers from throughout the series.
Long-term members Michelle Martin, Sue Grant and Bruce Durrant received special prizes of appreciation for their years of service to the showjumping cup.
